Frank O’Donnell quoted in India Today on India’s sixth-generation fighter aircraft options

APLN Senior Research Adviser, Frank O’Donnell, was quoted in India Today’s analysis by Pradip R. Sagar on India’s interest in joining a sixth-generation fighter aircraft programme, including options around GCAP and FCAS. The article examines how sixth-generation fighter aircraft are being developed as command nodes in interconnected combat systems, with capabilities such as AI-driven combat systems, manned-unmanned teaming, long-range precision strike, advanced sensors, and data-sharing networks.

O’Donnell cautioned that while GCAP and FCAS could offer long-term technology-transfer value, they remain unproven platforms. He argued that India should not let these programmes distract from more urgent priorities, including the induction of 114 Rafales and other proven aircraft, as well as the development of combat UAVs, standoff precision-strike munitions, and advanced air defences.
