Jeju Forum 2026: Between Collective Defense and Collective Security: Toward a New Security Architecture in East Asia
The Asia-Pacific Leadership Network (APLN) and the Jeju Peace Institute are co-hosting a session on ‘Between Collective Defense and Collective Security: Toward a New Security Architecture in East Asia’ at the Jeju Forum 2026.
About the Session
As alliance structures deepen and military capabilities expand across the Asia-Pacific, the region faces a fundamental question: can collective defense arrangements coexist with – or even evolve toward – a broader framework of collective security? This panel convenes senior leaders from defense and security sectors across the strategic divide to examine whether East Asia’s current security trajectory is sustainable, and what alternative architectures might reduce risks while addressing legitimate security concerns. Their exchange will explore the tensions between deterrence and reassurance, the prospects for confidence-building amid technological disruption, and whether inclusive security frameworks remain achievable in today’s geopolitical climate.
