This week, APLN Policy Fellow Dr Tanvi Kulkarni argues that populations are woefully unprepared to deal with the aftermath of nuclear weapons use. We also introduce a new project assessing scenarios of nuclear weapons use, and feature an interview with space expert Dr Namrata Goswami.

 

 

 

 

Contesting the illusion of peace:
Are we prepared for a nuclear war?

 

 

 

On 2 December, APLN Policy Fellow, Dr Tanvi Kulkarni, published a commentary where she warns that while nuclear risks and dangers are increasing, states and their citizens are not prepared for the actual consequences of a nuclear disaster.

Author Interview: Status of Existing and Emerging Asia Pacific Space Power Capabilities

 

 

 

 

We interviewed Dr Namrata Goswami, author of APLN’s Special Report “Status of Existing and Emerging Asia Pacific Space Powers Capabilities” from the WMD in Asia-Pacific series. She assesses the prospects of proliferation of space warfare capabilities, the institutional and legal regimes and constraints on space weaponization, worst-case militarization scenarios, and pathways for demilitarizing space.

From December 2021 to February 2022, the APLN will publish a series of special reports on “Reducing the Risk of Nuclear Weapon Use in Northeast Asia.” The project aims to assist policymakers in identifying ways to avoid a nuclear conflict, as well as to de-escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia by developing credible nuclear use cases and proposing policy solutions.

Future of Nuclear Disarmament Workshop
On 30 November, APLN Policy Fellows Elaine Natalie and Joel Petersson Ivre gave a presentation at a panel at the Future of Nuclear Disarmament Workshop, hosted by the University of Glasgow. They discussed the topic of disarmament conversion for verification purposes.
