This week we welcome new network members, and feature a special edition of Global Asia with APLN essays on WMD threats, upcoming webinars on Japanese perspectives on the DPRK nuclear program, and NPT and Asian security dynamics, plus member activities.

 

 

 

 

APLN Network Exceeds 100 Members

APLN is delighted to welcome eight new members to its network: New Zealand’s former Prime Minister, Helen Clark; Australian Member of Parliament, Tanya Plibersek; former Australian MP and UN human rights lawyer, Melissa Parke; former New Zealand MP, Ruth Dyson; New Zealand disarmament activist, Kate Dewes; former Pakistani Foreign Secretary and former diplomat, Salman Bashir; former Australian diplomat John McCarthy and Masakatsu Ota, Senior Editorial Writer at Kyodo News in Japan.

 

 

 

 

The latest edition of Global Asia was published this week, featuring essays analyzing WMD threats in the Asia Pacific. Essays by Richard Pilch and Miles PomperPeter HayesPetr Topychkanov, Robert AysonFeroz Hassan Khan, Chung-in Moon and Sue JeongRichard Tanter, Jonathan E. Forman and Alexander Kelle, and Namrata Goswami assess key features of WMD threats, capabilities, uses, and solutions across the region. These essays are based on an WMD project with more publications to come.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Tomorrow at 6.30-8.45 pm (KST), APLN is co-hosting a webinar on Assessing Northeast Asia Nuclear Domino: North Korean Nuclear Threat and Japanese Responses. APLN members and experts will discuss Japan’s response to nuclear threats in Northeast Asia, including threat assessments of China and the DPRK. Next Thursday 8 and Friday 9 July from 1-2.20pm (KST) APLN is hosting a webinar assessing the NPT and nuclear threats in Northeast Asia with the authors of the 7th Issue of the Korean Journal on Nuclear Nonproliferation and Energy in cooperation with the Korean Nuclear Policy Society (KNPS). Eight senior APLN members will evaluate the NPT in relation to nuclear latency in East Asia, challenges of DPRK’s nuclear program, legacies of the Fukushima Daichi nuclear reactor accident, and more. On 23 June, APLN member John Tilemann spoke at an event for the Australian Institute of International Affairs. He reviewed the global nuclear outlook in the context of the entry into force on the prohibition on the treaty of nuclear weapons. Phil Twyford MP, New Zealand’s Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control and other experts for the Inter-Parliamentary Union New Zealand Group and Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament’s closed session on disarmament and sustainable development.
