Implications of the Evolving US Nuclear Strategy

6 September 2024

This week at APLN, Jina Kim discusses the regional implications of recent changes to US nuclear strategy. We also share details about our upcoming webinar on how the US and ASEAN can better promote Asia-Pacific regional stability. This webinar will feature a report by Piper Campbell, which explores how Southeast Asian countries can navigate the US-China competition.

As always, we share recent activities from our network, including analysis on the US presidential election, Malaysia’s approach to geopolitics, the challenges of nuclear security, and more.

Jina Kim examines the recent update to the US Nuclear Employment Guidance, highlighting the shifting focus of US nuclear strategy to address coordinated threats from North Korea, China, and Russia, and explores the implications for South Korea’s involvement in US deterrence strategies, particularly regarding nuclear-conventional integration and tailored extended deterrence.

In this report from our Asia Dialogue on China-US Relations, Piper Campbell, former head of the US mission to ASEAN, identifies three key US priorities in Southeast Asia: maintaining economic access, ensuring freedom of movement, and not ceding the region to China. To achieve these goals, she argues that the US must do better in fostering mutual understanding with ASEAN countries and making stronger commitments to regional stability.
