[Call for Papers] The Future of Arms Control

APLN partner, the Journal for Peace and Nuclear Disarmament is looking for authors to write for a Special Feature of the journal titled, “The Future of Arms Control”.

With the birth of the US Trump administration, some might have forecasted the end of arms control. Indeed, the INF treaty was terminated, and the United States and the Russian Federation have withdrawn from the Open Skies Treaty. But these events do not necessarily mark the end of the decades of arms control. As we are entering an era of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), the notion of arms control should be given a renewed role to play in ushering in a world without nuclear weapons.

Given these recent developments, J-PAND editors are seeking articles related to how arms control contributes to, and paves the way for nuclear disarmament. Possible contributions are not limited to nuclear strategic arms reductions (i.e., US-Russian strategic nuclear arms control). Ideally, articles would contribute to answering the following questions that may include, but are not limited to:

  • Mechanics of arms control – should existing approaches be reinvigorated or do we need something new? Should trilateral (US, Russia, China) arms control work on a narrow or broad set of restraints?
  • Role of missile and missile defense restraints.
  • Role of conventional/regional arms control, particularly in Europe, Asia and South Asia.
  • Underpinnings of arms control – How do deterrence and strategic stability determine the kinds of arms control pursued? What role does democracy play in national support for arms control?
  • Emerging technologies and arms control – What are reasonable expectations for the new TPNW regime, and which major implementation challenges does it face?

The deadline of the article submission is July 31, 2021. For more information about the journal and submission of the article, please visit J-PAND’s original page here.
