National policy: Three Non-Nuclear Principles

Akira Kawasaki, APLN member, published a critique of Prime Minister Takaichi’s suggestion to review Japan’s Three Non-Nuclear Principles, reminding that the principles are a national policy rooted in Japan’s reflection on the sacrifices of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Okinawa and were established through a unanimous Diet resolution.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s personal opinion is that the Three Non-Nuclear Principles should be revised. In her own writings, she argues that the “no nuclear weapons” part of the three principles—”not possessing, not producing, and not allowing the introduction of nuclear weapons”—would be “a hindrance” in the event of an emergency. Yet, she has begun considering a revision so soon after taking office. While this may be an appeal to hawkish party members and domestic supporters, it is infuriating.
