The APLN – Korea Times Essay Contest 2021
“Youth, Disarmament, and Peace in the Asia-Pacific Region”
Following the success of the 2020 APLN-Korea Times Essay Contest, the APLN and the Korea Times co-hosted another essay contest this year to engage the youth on topics of International Nuclear Governance and Emerging Nuclear Trends. This contest, supported by the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was an opportunity for students from around the world to share their unique perspectives on various nuclear issues.
This year, the contestants were asked to address the NPT, TPNW and International Nuclear Governance, and/or Emerging Nuclear Trends (New Technologies, The Future of Arms Control, big data, etc.)
The following are the award winners of the 2021 APLN-Korea Times Essay Contest:
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Award:
Philip Chennery, graduate student at the SOAS University of London
The Korea Times Award:
Lee Sang-ou, undergratduate student at the Korea National Open University
The Asia-Pacific Leadership Network Award:
Miriam Astrid Machado Rieback, graduate student at the Korea University
Honorable mentions:
Lee Yoon-ki from Hanyang University
Jamie Withorne from University of Oslo
Dustin Edward Hinkley from American University
Mr. Chennery will receive 2 million won and an award plaque, and Mr. Lee and Ms. Rieback will each receive 1 million won and a plaque. Three other honorable mentions winners will each receive 500,000 won and a plaque.
The winners received their awards at an award ceremony held at The Korea Times office in Seoul, on November 26.
