Press Release

The 75th Anniversary Nagasaki Nuclear-Pandemic Scenario Project

The COVID-19 pandemic is now threatening the world, affecting all aspects of international community. Nuclear disarmament is no exception. It is  critically important now to analyze the relationship between post-pandemic international order and the nuclear weapon risks. The key question we ask here is: “What are the opportunities driven by global pandemics for Northeast Asian governments, civil society, and market actors to reduce nuclear risk and resume nuclear disarmament?”

Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition, Nagasaki University, (RECNA), with a partnership with Nautilus Institute for security and sustainability, Asia Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear non-proliferation and Disarmament (APLN), decided to hold the event as a special event on the 75th Anniversary of atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The event will take place on the following date/time.

1st round: October 31 (Sat) 9:00-13:00 and Nov. 1 (Sun) 9:30-13:00 [Japan Time]

2nd round: November 14 (Sat) 9:00-13:00 and Nov. 15 (Sun) 9:30-13:00 [Japan Time]

The meeting will take place using on-line application tool and about 40-50 participants from diversified background, nationalities, gender, age, will join the event. The event will be held under the “Chatham House Rule”* but the Opening session on October 31st will be open to the public and media.

*  Chatham House Rule: “When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.”
