Statement on Nuclear Test by North Korea
Japan Atomic Energy Commission
September 4, 2017
1. North Korea (DPRK) yesterday conducted a nuclear test which is the sixth in its history and the largest ever. This constitutes a clear violation to the series of resolutions adopted by the Security Council, the latest being the resolution 2321 of 30 November 2016.
2. Such an act is in defiance of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, a serious and pressing threat to international peace and security and a challenge to the efforts of the international community to promote nuclear disarmament and secure nuclear non-proliferation. The Japan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) condemns the act stronger than ever.
3. The JAEC strongly demands that North Korea abandons its nuclear weapon program immediately and completely, and return to the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.
4. The promotion of nuclear disarmament and the strengthening of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime is indispensable for the international pursuit of peaceful use, research and development of nuclear energy for the betterment of human welfare. Therefore, the JAEC has consistently supported such efforts being made by the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency, among others, and held that Japan should take a leading role in such efforts.
